Of course, the 1912 (EC 981) Braithwaite was built in Staveley, Westmorland by Herbert Braithwaite. EC 981 was the first motorcycle to have overhead and inclined valves. It was used extensively in Lakeland hill climbs and reliability trials. It still exists today. Herbert’s brother (Jack) rode EC 392. Originally built in 1908, EC 392 was upgraded with an identical engine. Jack had more nerve and, as an amateur rider on a much better machine, he showed the professionals a thing or two!
